For this project, I was tasked to create a 2v2 PvP level design. I had never done this before, so I had to do an endless amount of research to familiarize myself with the fundamentals of PvP level design. My big influence for this level is the tactical FPS shooter Counter Strike. I had to learn about choke points, alternating and connecting paths, how to implement different types of play into a multiplayer PvP environment, and the use of shape language for a multiplayer level. I started this project by designing level design flowcharts that would represent the objective and flow of the level design. Then, I began drawing simple concepts and layouts on paper, then after a couple of iterations, I took those hand-drawn maps into Photoshop where I did simple linework and brought out the other details in the level. I also made several different maps showcasing different parts of the level design. I wanted to make sure to break everything down in an easy-to-read format.
After designing the 2D maps, I then took the concept into Unreal Engine 5 and began blocking out the level using an asset pack I had purchased from the Marketplace in the Epic Games Launcher.
I have learned a lot about level design at the time of this project, but it was still a new and welcome challenge for me. I look forward to exploring more level design in the future.
